Douglas Sanders, 1938-2022: Early ‘Canadian’ gay activist was involved in homophile organizing and was critical of the 1969 reform.

I learned so much from my talks and the interviews I did with Doug. He shaped quite a lot of my work on the first two editions of The Regulation of Desire (a third edition of which will be published next fall by Concordia University Press). He taught me about the work of the Association for Social Knowledge (ASK) in Vancouver, homophile organizing across ‘Canada’ in the 1960s, his opening up of space for law reform initiatives and popular education about homosexuality, his interview with Everett George Klippert in detention, and why I needed to be critical of the 1969 criminal code reform. He was also a supporter of US draft resisters against the US war against the Vietnamese people and of Indigenous people and struggles. For those wanting to know more about Doug’s experiences and insights of what was going on in ‘Canada’ in the 1960s see Gary Kinsman, The Regulation of Desire: Homo and Hetero Sexualities, Montreal: Black Rose Books, 1996.
